1979-1980
1979-80 the season started
with great expectations. Even
though at on time or another, five key wrestlers were out of the
line-up, the wrestlers never gave up and ended with another banner year. The season ended with twelve victories and another Centennial
League title, thanks to the contributions from Dave Gross, Jesse White,
Roy Hottenstein and Ron Haas. In
post-season action, Kurt Wentz, Greg Stewart, Phil Smith (District XI
champ), Wally Frisch (District XI runner-up), and Don Haas (3rd
in the District XI Tournament). All
had success in their individual weight classes.
Phil Smith, Kurt Wentz, and Greg Stewart advanced to the State
Tournament, where Kurt Wentz won State
Champ and Greg Stewart won State
Champ for a second time. This
helped the team finish third respectively and only a half point behind
Notre Dame. This was the
fifth consecutive season NWL Wrestling had finished among the leaders in
the team race at the state level!
